When buying a solar photovoltaic system, what does 3.0 kW mean?

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I know that kW means kilowatt but does 3kW mean it produces 3 kW per day or what? If my home uses 2-3 kW per day, does this mean a 3 kW system that is tied to the grid, would result in close to a zero electric bill for that month?

Using your numbers.

You use 3 kWh per day on your home
You install a 3 KW solar power sytem. If you only got 1 hour of sun a day you would zero out your electric bill. But normally we get more then one hour a day. It is all based on how many Peak Sun hours you get in your area. If you get 5 Peak Sun Hours a day in your area with the same 3kw system you would get 15 kWhs from the system.

which photovoltaic system best meets the needs of homeowners?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

hello everyone :) . i’m writing an essay on the benefits and impacts of photovoltaic systems. one part that i want to talk about is which type of photovoltaic systems would be best for homeowners between stand-alone and grid-connected systems. i dont really know that much about the two so if anyone could give me their opinions on it i would be very greatful. thanx in advance :) )

I understand the question to be:
For photovoltaic, grid or non-grid system?

The economics are fairly clear.

Photovoltaic systems are going to set you back a bundle. The cost to provide x number of kWh with this technology is about as high as it gets.

Grid systems would allow you to sell back your excess capacity.

Therefore, unless a local utility can be legally obliged to buy back your energy at a greatly inflated price vs. current wholesale (and no, I won’t be surprised if an idiot scheme like that doesn’t already exist somewhere), you don’t want to size a residential system such that it provides any more than your own immediate need — otherwise, you’ll essentially be selling your high cost electricity at a LOSS. A grid connected system just helps you to do that at yet more expense.

We’ve all got our fingers crossed that someday, the technology will have continued to improve enough to get the efficiencies up and costs down to make this a practical alternative for those of us who live in predominantly sunny climates. While improving, it ain’t there yet. There are better "green" alternatives for domestic use.

Does anyone know the price of a fixed photovoltaic system versus a movable system?

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Dear my friend,

I live in Ohio and go to a High School. I am currently doing a science fair project on solar energy. I am comparing a stationary solar cell system to a one axis tracking system. I am wondering if anyone would be able to give me a price quote of a fixed solar system and a movable one. Your help would be much appreciated.

I have already sent e-mail to three different “solar” companies. As of now, none have returned. If you answer, and want the more details of my project feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Zubacat

Im not sure what size your really need, but if you only need one panel you can go to Home Depot they sell it by panel.. at least $450.00 each panel 3 x 5… or yet search the internet Im sure you can talk to someone for a price of a panel.. the whole system cost around $25,000.00 and I dont think they will waste their time if you are only asking for a panel, you have to go to their shop.

How can i assemble a home photovoltaic system?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Depends where you live. If you live in Arizona, California, or Oregon, I would suggest checking out Solar City, a large-scale installer of solar cells that will give you a free quote. With them, you can even lease the solar cells on your house and still save money on your power bill.

How many batteries for a photovoltaic system on my house?

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

If you intend to be totally off-line as far as electricity by using photovoltaic, forget it. The cost alone will kill you.

If you are in an area that will allow it, a combination of several alternative sources of energy are viable. However, none of these are cheap from the get go.Over a long period of time they will probably equal what you spend now for energy.

You need , Solar, battery, hydro-electric, wind, passive etc. all working together if you want to get totally off line.

Keep in mind, the battery system to store the energy will cost a ton. It can be done. Just have to have to correct area with all things working prefect. If you are lucky, you can actually make money but selling the electricity back to the area provider. They have to pay you for it of you are producing it.

Wished I was there but probably will never b.
